Samsung French Door Fan Motor loud Model RF26XAEBP

I noticed my fan on my refrigerator was making an excessive amount of noise. It was hard to hear the T.V.   So the first challenge was how to gain access to the fan.

First, turn the referigerator off at the circuit breaker or unplug it. Take everything out of the refrigerator.  Then remove all shelfs,  including the bottom crisper drawers. In the center back of the refrigerator you will see a panel. This is the panel where "Twin Cooling" vent circle at the top is attached.

Notice that there are three Phillips screws at the bottom. Two on the panel and one on the center bracket where the shelf bracket would go into.  Remove these three screws.  On that same center bracket, follow it up all the way to the top of the panel. Notice a small cover at the top of the center bracket just above the last spot a shelf bracket could be inserted.  Use a flat head screw driver and pry out that small cover.  You will see another Phillips head screw behind that cover, remove it. At the bottow start pulling the panel away.  Now, on the right and left sides of the panel you will notice little arrows. These point to the spot where you need to pull in the panel towards the center to release the plastic tabs that help to hold the panel in place.  Do the bottoms ones first which will further release the panel. Then do the next set of arrows above it. The panel will side down and  come off.  Note:  Sometimes the panel is stuck at the top due to ice build up.  You can either continue to wiggle it in an attempt to remove it from the ice.  Or let the ice melt (This may take hours depending on the ice build up).

In the above picture you will notice the ice build up that this refrigerator had. This ice went up to the fan and that is what was causing the noise from the fan.   I took a hair dryer and melted the ice on the evaporator and the fan.  Notice how the rest of evaporator does not have ice.  There is a heater element that runs around the outside of the evaporator but not around the top. I think that was a design flaw.   I have owned the refrigerator for little over a year. So, it took that long to build up.  I guess I will need to do this about ounce a year.  Note: I am updating this with a permanent solution. There is a black sensor located at the top right (it has wires going to it) and is attached to the evaporator pipe. Move that sensor to the top middle evaporator pipe (The place where the ice builds up at the top). I did this on mine in February of 2013 and the ice has not built up since (Today's date August 2014).

Reverse the process to put everything back.  Don't forget to attached the two wire harness back into their plug.  Slide the panel back in place, it should easily snap in place. If it is hard make sure the wires are not sticking out at the top which would prevent it from going into place.  Put all Phillips screws back, shelfs  back and turn the power on.

  2. Glad to here you like the post. I had to melt the ice again today. About every 6 months I have to melt the ice. I notice there is a class action lawsuit against Samsung for this issue. It is definitely a design problem. They ran the heater element around the sides and bottom but not around the top so the ice continues to build up on the top until it is melted.

    1. My same model fridge is 3 yrs. old and your article saved us a repair bill. The fridge began making a low hum but would stop every time one of the doors were opened but start again about 30 secs. after door was closed. It quit for about a wk. and then came back louder than ever. I called Samsung twice and they always said it needs to be professionally serviced by a repairman who was trained in Samsungs and that they recommended. Only one guy was in my area and he never returned my call. My fridge looked exactly like the ones pictured. I could see ice that had oozed out of the holes on the cooling panel.Going to check into that class action lawsuit next and notify Samsung of the ice build up. Thank you for your helpful and concise article.

    3. Thanks for your post (Lakemoor). My refrigerator is about two years old, and while it was under warranty the evap unit was replaced 4 times. The problem always came back, and it has now for the 5th time. Of course it's now out of warranty, and Samsung is unresponsive. I would like to know more about that class action suit--can you provide any information?

    4. Solve the ice build up and fan noise by turning ice maker off. Remove all the ice and run fridge for a day then turn ice maker back on for a day then turn ice maker off only turn it on when you need ice. Best run fridge with ice maker off. This should solve your problem with ice build in fridge and end the fan noise problem

  3. I did a chat session on Samsung's website back in Early February 2012, informed them of the problem. We went around and around but finally she said she would refer my request to the executive customer service. Good news, They sent out a Samsung technician. He tested the heater (worked good), check the panels. He went ahead and ordered the panel which comes with everything (From the fan down to the bottom). He come back to replace it later in February. We compared the two and they looked identical. He thought that maybe the fan on the old one was running slower than a new one and that was possibly causing ice to build up near the top. It is now June 14 and it has not iced up yet. It usually took about 8 months to ice up before, so I will update this post if it ever ices over again.

  4. It is February 27 2013 and guess what, the fan is loud again. I am going to contact Samsung again to see if they will send a technician out.

  7. I wanted to update the post. On February 27 2013 I posted that I contacted Samsung and they were going to have a service company call me. After that another representative called from Samsung and asked me questions about the refrigerator. (I thought is the service company at first). He finally said he had the information he wanted and that a service company would call me. The service company did call me but said they had to charge me to come out. I thought Samsung was going to pay for it since they had last time. So I refused to pay. I went ahead and pulled it apart again and it was frozen at the top again. I defrosted and moved the temperature sensor the pipe it was on over to the pipe that keeps freezing up. It has been running fine so far. Of course, it takes up to a year before it builds up enough ice to cause the noise.

  9. Thanks for the write up! My fridge started making noises last night, I found your post and today I spent an hour removing all the food ( gave me excuse to clean out too) and remove the panel exposing ice buildup on the coils. One question though, where does the water go as it melts? I noticed a little hole under the coils. Does the water have a drain line? Either way, the noise is gone . I'll have to remember this trick. My fridge lasted 3.5 years before noises started.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hey Reed yes there is a drain port that expels the water. More than likely, it will have a frozen plug in the drain hole if you are getting water under your crisper drawers. Will need to make sure it is clear.

I just serviced this model today. The issue seems to be the way the air flows inside the wall chamber. For some reason it doesn't want to evaporate after heater kicks on, hence the frosting which eventually turns to ice.

Replaced the sensor, thermostat checked ok and the heater was good. I really dislike Samsungs'. Very little information and questionable engineering.

Samsung loves to hide their screws behind little plastic shields.

Thanks for sharing your refrigerator repair with the Samsung community...it will help many.

    Nice article John.

  11. I'm having trouble removing the front panel. It appears to be stuck at the top but I can't tell if there's a clip or if it's from ice build up. Pulling the bottom back I can see the condenser and there doesn't appear to be much ice build up at the top but it's hard to see. There's a styofoam backing also, does that come out along with the panel or does the panel come out first? Please help, thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The styofoam is part of the panel that pulls off. I had the same problem where the panel was stuck to ice at the top. What I did was took a air dryer and put it under the bottom after I pulled it out (pried it out) so that the heat can get up to the top. It took me about 1/2 hour with the hair dryer before the top part of the panel released from the ice. You can tell if the ice is all melted because the dripping will stop (the dripping of the melting ice).

  14. My RF261BEAESR started doing this and I can't get the cool select pantry nor the the top of the drawer out. Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We had a similar problem. Water drips down from the evaporator and pools under the drawer and freezes. Probably, your drawer is stuck because of the ice underneath it. We defrosted our refrigerator and the drawer came out. We also reset the temperatures to 40 for refrigerator and 0 for the freezer. That solved the cool select problem of it freezing shut. However, then we had to pull out the drawer once a month or so and sop up the water that accumulates. It also doesn't solve the fan noise problem from occurring. I just finished pulling the styrofoam panel mentioned by John Considine and defrosting large chunks of ice from the top right where the copper pipe enters and from the fan blades. So raising the temperature probably won't solve all the problems, but makes them a little easier to deal with on your own.

  15. Thanks John!
Last year we had this exact issue with the same model. I called somebody to fix it and they didn't know what was causing the problem. I had to research and tell them what to do (based on this article I found). They charged $70 dlls.
8 months later (last week) I had the same issue again. No problem. I already knew what to do. Couple of hours later, refrigerator was working fine again.
(this time I just struggled more removing the back panel because the ice was kind of sticked to the foam, other than that, everything was just straight forward)

Thanks again for this article John!

  16. Thanks for taking the time to post this John. You've saved us the cost of a repairman's visit. All of a sudden a few days ago our fridge began making the noise described above. We followed your instructions and it is now just as quiet as it's ever been. I should have followed your suggestion to use a hairdryer if the panel doesn't come off easily. I wiggled it a bit too much and dislodged some of the Styrofoam as it stuck to the ice. In the end, all's well.

  17. Thank you! We bought RF266ABBP in May of 2009. We heard the noise a few days ago very loud. This was our last shot before paying the repair man. We found your advice through Google and fixed it right up. It had a huge block of ice surrounding the fan. Thank you! Hopefully it goes another 5 years without an issue.

  18. I have an RS265TDBP side by side Samsung fridge. It's less than four years old and I've had to remove everything to thaw it out three times now. It's a major pain and getting really old. Yesterday the evaporator fan motor started making the scraping sound again, this time only 6 months since I last unthawed it. I'm so sick of it I'm about ready to take it to the dump and buy some other brand. The design is clearly defective and Samsung refuses to fix or acknowledge it even though countless people have documented the problem. Very frustrating!!

  19. I have french door refrig. that got a noisy fan. 2 yrs old. and out of warranty. Tech came and said it it a known problem, very common, in which the drain at the bottom of the unit plugs, water from defrost cycle pools, and frost forms around fan and noise starts. IT WILL OCCUR EVERY TIME DUE TO BAD DESIGN BY SAMSUMG. Solution was a Samsumg retro part:DA61-06796A, drain clip, inserted into bottom drain hole and condition will stop, or reoccur, at least, he has newer seen it reoccur.

  23. I think I have found a contributing cause to this issue! We have the same issue ICE building up over the internal cooling fan.. After defrosting for the second time in 3 months(due to noisy fan), I noticed the water was not draining behind that panel inside the fridge(where the cooling fan is). After hours of trying to unblock, thinking that it was ice down the drain, I pulled the fridge out, took off the bottom panel and removed the (grey) drain hoses that run into the tray.
I noticed that they have a one way valve( I assume to stop hot air returning inside the fridge) had become hardened and not opening, stopping any moisture from draining away. Will see how this goes, but could explain if there wasn't an issue for the first couple of years. Note our fridge was purchased from previous home owner, so unsure how long the issue has been happening.

That's the link from Samsung Support. There are two clips to push in to get the crisper shelf to separate from the filter assembly. You have to push them pretty hard. It helps to remove the wheels the drawers slide along. I ended having to use a screwdriver to get enough leverage but the shelf popped up.

  29. Thanks for this article. I've given it a shot. Huge ice on the fan that I had to defrost. I'm now waiting for the fridge to turn back on, I hope it all cools down and its back in action.

    Couple of comments on my version of the fridge;
    1. There were only 2 screws at the bottom and 1 in behind the clip
    2. I had to pull the whole casing plastic and foam off
    3. The wiggle didnt really help, but once the clips are off you kind just have to tug it

I had pooling of water and ice under my crisper as well. Hopefully that will go away now.

I havent found the black sensor but now that I know how to open it up, at least i can fix it. Thanks again for this post.

    1. Yeah that probably did the trick but unless you install the new clip
      # DA61-06796A (about 5 bucks from Amazon) behind the "Twin Cooling" panel at the back of the fridge AND make sure the drain tubes accessed beneath the lowermost panel on the back of the unit are not plugged up the problem will re-occur. The drain tube on the right side as you are looking at it is usually the problem as there is a reducing nipple inside the tube that constricts water flow and plugs up I am just going to cut off the narrow section so it does not re-plug. Google this part DA97-04049D and you can see the narrow "sippy cup" type nipple that causes the problem. Be sure to unplug the fridge when working on these tubes as there is a fan and electrical components behind the access panel. If you have completely defrosted you have some time before problems happen again so do all the research and watch all the youtube videos before embarking on repairs.

  34. A big THANK YOU to John Considine! This article helped me diagnose and remedy the Samsung design flaw in my refrigerator. John's updated tip (in green above) described moving the defrost sensor. I was having trouble imagining where the new location was, and then I found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_kbnddADDU

Up to about 4:30minutes, the video shows where to replace the sensor! It is a different model than ours, but the "guts" and concepts are the same. I am not sure, but it looks like Samsung has a fix for this in Europe? Why don't they just do this in the USA?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Did you replace the Sensor or relocate it? John, Thanks a million. Love this fridge, but hate this quality problem. John, I know it's been a while, but did relocating the sensor correct the frost build up for good? THANKS!

  36. I just did the panel removal Ice removal for the second time due to fan noise. It's been 4 months since the first time. It was 3 years from new since it started with fan noise for the first time. The first defrost was much worse that this time. There was ice all the way up into the ice maker and covering most of the coils. The bottom drain was clear.

This second time most of the ice was in the upper area around the fan and top of the coils. It only took about 20 minutes to defrost with a hair dryer and ready to go back together. I did move the sensor from the right top side (sensor in the black goop with the yellow wires) to the middle top side where all the ice was forming. We'll see if this sensor relocation solves to problem of the defrost function not getting rid of all the ice buildup and gradually obstructing the fan.

If anyone else has done the sensor relocate please add your input as far as eliminating the ice buildup that obstructs the fan. Thanks!

Best luck to all on this. It's a shame Samsung has cast it's customers to the wind on this issue. These are really nice refrigerators with this one terrible flaw (ice build up on the coils obstructing the fan). They have chosen not to address this known quality issue at the cost of their customers IMO and that's truly a shame. I would have been happy even if they had a retrofit of some sort that's not too costly.

    1. Our fridge is 3 years old. It went 2 years with no issues and now I have defrosted it 4 times in the last year. I have done everything I found online with no luck so far. After the third defrosting I re-leveled the fridge so the front is slightly higher than the back. Some people said that this helps keep the front doors closed tighter. I also repaired some foam around the back cover, and moved the white sensor to the other coolant line. But once again I just had to defrost the fridge for a fourth time. I noticed that the front door seal is cracked where the doors come together, so I will repair that seal the best I can in hopes that this will correct the issue. My thought is that too much moisture is getting into the fridge.

    1. Unfortunately the ice buildup will come back. My first defrost lasted 3 months and then the fan noise started again. 2nd time my fan got noisy there was less ice buildup and I moved the sensor. I'm going on 4 months now with no ice showing in the rear vent holes. I'm hoping relocating the sensor to the top by the fan keeps the defrost going longer to keep the fan area free of ice build up. If not I'll defrost once more and go fridge shopping.

If you don't keep the fan from slowing and eventually stopping, you will lose cooling capacity and destroy the fan.

I have all Samsung TVs, stove, fridge, and used to have Samsung phones. I now switched to Apple iphones for our family, and am phasing out Samsung products as they fail. I really liked the fridge, but such a serious design flaw and no effort by Samsung to fix leaves me feeling betrayed as a customer. My Samsung Bluetooth DVD player also has internet connectivity issues they cannot solve(another common problem) Samsung just abandons the problem and hopes you go away. I am going away, from Samsung.

Good luck with your fix, and for anyone looking at buying avoid Samsung products or be ready for an expensive problem.

Opened it up after leaving it unplugged for 24 hours, and it STILL had an incredible amount of ice built up around the entire coil. Samsung has not been very helpful, and in fact I've been told three different stories from three different Samsung people I have spoken with. Now I will try and see what they can do (at their expense) to ensure this doesn't keep happening. Wish me luck.

    1. Well, here it is exactly one month later, and I noticed today that there is once again ice buildup coming from the holes in the back. I will try and get Samsung to fix it at their expense, but I know from previous calls that it could be weeks before they can send someone, and they have given me conflicting stories about who would be responsible to foot the bill.

  49. Another thank you to you John. Same problem, different model, but managed to free thanks to your blog. Unfortunately could not move black sensor above middle at top - not long enough to reach.

  50. i have a two year old RF28HMEDBSR/AA that I had a repair guy install the fix for the ice build up May 2016. The fan started rattling again from hitting the ice so I managed to disassemble everything to get the back cover off to begin the melting process. The new longer piece of metal that is supposed to keep the drain hole open appears to be working as the hole looked to be open. However there was ice in the drain tray to either side as well as ice all up around the fan. Is there another "fix"?

  51. Thanks to this post, I was able to resolve my fan noise. My samsung is about four years old and this was the first time I notice a loud fan. Sure enough there was a huge ice build up around the fan and on top of the heat exchanger coils. In my case, I think this may have been the result of someone ( my daughter) leaving the door open for about four hours. First noticed water in the deli tray, ice oozing out of the fan cover, and then the noise. Hopefully this was an isolated incident due to the open door. Took me about three hours to disassemble and melt the ice with a hair dryer but now am good. Also had trouble get the cover off the top as it was frozen solid but with the hair dryer, it finally let go and allowed me to remove the cover. I have a french door design and there was a center bar with a screw on top and the bottom of the cover which needed to be removed in addition to the two screws at the bottom. Also noted that the fan is attached to the cover so you have to be careful not to damage the fan wires when removing the cover.

  52. I would like to offer much thanks to the OP, as their analysis and detailed instructions made a world of difference to me. My symptoms were much the same, and as I took things apart, I too found the evaporator iced at the top left, and the fan housing glaciated.

In addition to melting the ice on the evaporator and fan housing, there was substantial ice buildup inside the foam insulation airflow channels. I carefully removed the fan housing and tin shield, and then removed tape and carefully began prying up the central foam backer to the air channels, melting ice the the hair dryer as I went until I could lift most of that foam panel up.

  53. John, I cannot thank you enough. Our French door Samsung had the loud, annoying fan noise. I looked up the symptoms and found your entry. That back panel would not come loose because there was significant ice build up. My husband took a hair dryer to the panel for a good half hour and it still took a lot of prying and wiggling to shake the panel off of the ice block. We would have been afraid to attempt this without your detailed instructions. The fan is operating quietly now and next time this happens we will know what to do. Many thanks!!!

  54. Excellent instructions. Follow them closely, and it's a 30 min job. Moving the sensor was the new tip I picked up. I've got it on the top now, and will keep my fingers crossed.

  55. I have basically a samsung refrigerator with the sparkling water dispenser, but basically it's the same thing (twin cooling) I had a medium humming sound that came about after 4 years of owning the unit.

I have a comprehensive coverage so the repair was free. The technician replaced the entire panel that includes the fan and two plugs. I am not sure if the sensor is on the panel or not. I forgot to check. The unit was unplugged, the top doors opened (my unit is top french door, middle drawer, and freezer bottom drawer) to defrost overnight. Because of this I couldn't tell you if there was any frost build up or not, however I did not notice any water behind the humidity trays.

After the panel and fan was replaced the sounds came back in a couple days. So the bottom line is I don't know what it is. From reading these helpful comments. I open 1 door and use a magnet to keep the fan going so I can pin point where exactly its coming from.

I forgot to mention I had the technician pull out the ice tray and silicon the left bottom seam so that warmer air from the top fridge doesn't flow in to create water condensation that would freeze in the ice cube environment. I haven't checked the drain but I don't think its a frost issues since the fridge was defrosted and panel, fan changed but sound came back quite quickly in 1-2 days.

Hope you can use this information.

  56. We just defrosted this way and now the refrigerator isn't running at all. We put everything back exactly as it was....any thoughts?

  57. Thanks - A great article. Saved me from waiting for two days for the fridge to defrost. I woauldn't have had the nerve to pull that panel off without those instructions and pictures. This is the first time this has happened in the seven years we've owned the unit so I'm hoping it's a good long while before I have to deal with this again. Of course I replaced four ice makers during that time so I guess Samsung gets you one way or another...

  58. Thanks John - The fix worked great - Was not sure how to move the sensor so left it in place....This old Vietnam Vet needed a few pictures to get it moved..But no more noise, and a huge repair bill was avoided.

  59. Thank you so much for this thread! Really helped me out after a failed attempt. I think I got a little carried away with the blow dryer, though. In one particular spot low on the panel where I was trying to melt the ice enough just to get the panel off, I spent too long with the hot air, and the plastic back wall bubbled up a little and split... Otherwise, went fine thanks to you guys.

  60. Mine was doing the same thing. Did some research and discovered that the unit had not been properly leveled. The front wheels should not be on the ground, but we're. I adjusted those and the noise stopped at least for now. 61. Excellent advice. The procedure worked almost as stated. The differences, for me, were related to the model.
My model was a new (less than 2 years old) counter depth. There were three screws...two at the bottom and one in the center. The panel was really frozen in, as was the screw in the center of the panel. Had to wait until it thawed. Then...the panel did not come out when pulling down; rather it came straight out, only after considerable time thawing. Once out, the ice was really thick and all over the coils. Used a hair dryer to quickly melt the ice. Once the ice was melted and I dried the whole area, I put the panel back in place...no problem...and screwed it in.
The fridge started right back up and is working fine.

  66. I tried this on the newer RF24 French Door model. Blew off the ice and moved the sensor. Was getting to the point where I was having to defrost every quarter when the fan noise started. Hopefully it will be better. If anyone has this model and like me prefers disassembly instructions, found the manual here - https://www.scribd.com/document/355383835/RF24FSEDBSR-AA-Samsung-Refrigerator-Service-Manual

  70. Good post regarding noise in refrigerator. Mostly the noise is due to the cooling fan. I am a technician working in samsung service center and posts like these are very useful for people like us to upgrade ourselves.

  71. Here's an easy temporary fix (since it treats only the symptom of Samsung's flawed design, rather than cause): Simultaneously press "Freezer" and "Lighting" on front panel of fridge and hold (8 seconds on my fridge) until it beeps. Release, and press "Freezer" repeatedly (three times for my model) until it displays "rd" (rear defrost). This manually activates the rear defroster, and your fridge will beep annoyingly for awhile (about 27 minutes on my fridge). I usually repeat this process 4-6 times in a row, setting my phone timer for 27 minutes to keep reminding me to go and restart it. This fix usually lasts me a couple of weeks. If you remember to do it frequently, on a preventative basis--say, before going to work or to bed, you may stay ahead of the problem.
